Heather was educated at Loughborough University, UK, during this time she worked as a swimming teacher, pool and open water lifeguard, before joining the Institute of Naval Medicine between 2002 and 2007 where she completed a range of thermal and survival projects for military customers which included rebreather devices and in service lifejackets. She then moved to the University of Portsmouth to complete her PhD, a post doc position and now lectures there. She teaches and researches in the areas of environmental physiology and thermoregulation, and has recent research collaborations in water safety with the Royal National Lifeboat Institute, Federation Internationale de Natation and International Triathlon Union. She has authored, co-authored and presented this work to industry partners, and at international conferences. In her leisure time she is a keen open water swimmer and continues to teach and coach swimming.
