Niklas is a medical doctor, researcher, educator, and lifeguard interested in drowning epidemiology and the medical aspects of drowning, aquatic incidents and lifesaving. Niklas is the Medical Doctor for Surf Life Saving Denmark, the National Course Director on the generic resuscitation training programme for lifeguards in Denmark, and a current International Life Saving Federation Medical Committee member.

Niklas’ primary focus is to develop an “Utstein” style drowning database of fatal and non-fatal drowning incidents in Denmark. To improve the identification of drowning incidents, he has been vital in developing the Danish Drowning Formula, a text-search algorithm that identifies drowning cases in electronic medical records. Niklas’ other areas of interest include drowning prevention, medical care for drowning persons in the pre-hospital and in-hospital setting, management of in-water spinal injuries, mental health in lifeguard organisations, and medical education of lifeguards.
