Shayne Baker OAM is an experienced lifesaver, educator, and water safety advocate who has contributed to drowning prevention strategies at local, national, and international levels. Over his career, he has been a learner, teacher, national president, academic supervisor, volunteer lifeguard, and examiner of lifesavers across Australasia.
He has played a significant role in advancing drowning prevention knowledge and remains an active presenter and delegate at national and international conferences, including the World Conference on Drowning Prevention. His practitioner research and leadership have focused on educational initiatives on water safety and survival swimming, flood response, climate change impacts, and the mental health of aquatic professionals.
Based in Queensland, he continues to lead programs that equip people of all ages with water safety knowledge and lifesaving skills, particularly in inland waterways where drowning risks are the highest.
Complementing these initiatives, Shayne is Managing Director of Peridis Publishing & Training (https://peridis.com.au/) and an Academic Supervisor at the University of Southern Queensland. He also serves as a Commissioner with the International Life Saving Federation Rescue Commission, Peer Support Officer with Surf Life Saving Queensland, and Director of Research at Yellow Dove Australia (https://www.yellowdoveaustralia.com.au/).
