I am a Lecturer, teaching on BSc Sport Performance and Exercise and BA Physical Education and Sport Coaching programmes. I am currently completing the write-up of my applied interdisciplinary PhD at Leeds Trinity University (to be awarded by the University of Leeds), which investigates factors affecting floating capability with implications for drowning prevention and water safety, aiming to strengthen the evidence for advice such as “Float to Live”. My project is supervised by Professor Martin Barwood and Dr Heather Massey.
My research interests include swimming and water safety skills, ergonomics and human factors, and sport and exercise science, with a focus on physiology and biomechanics. Prior to entering academia, I served as a Royal Navy submariner, which led to my interest in human performance in challenging environments. I am a member of the Chartered Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (CASES) Environmental Extremes Special Interest Group (EESIG), and have contributed as a reviewer for the Royal Life Saving Society Commonwealth Drowning Prevention Diploma. I have also attended recent Conferences on Drowning Prevention in Australia and Egypt. In addition, I am a member of the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (CIEHF) and recently published a related magazine article: https://ergonomics.org.uk/resource/floating-fit.html
