Jennifer (Jenny) Blitvich, PhD – Australia
Associate Professor Jenny Blitvich is Deputy Head, School of Health Sciences and Psychology at Federation University Australia. Her background is in Human Movement and Sport Science and her PhD investigated the Prevention of Shallow Water Diving Injury. While Jenny is involved in injury prevention research generally, her strongest research interests lie in water safety and drowning prevention. She is considered Australia’s leading expert in shallow water diving injury prevention. Jenny has collaborated with a range of aquatic stakeholders, including the Royal Life Saving Society – Australia; the Australian Water Safety Council; Aquatics and Recreation Victoria; AUSTSWIM; and Lifesaving Victoria, in research, and importantly, in translating research findings into practice. For example, as chapter author in Teaching Swimming and Water Safety: The Australian Way, she has made her PhD spinal injury prevention findings accessible to swim teachers across Australia. This work has been incorporated within the AUSTSWIM curriculum. She has a long publication record of research articles and book chapters, including two chapters in Bieren’s Drowning Prevention, Rescue, Treatment. Jenny has supervised PhD, Masters and Honours students across a range of aquatics topics. Committed to aquatics education, she has taught and coached in this field for more than 30 years.
