Dr. Molly Johnson has led the research component of the Drowning Prevention and Water Safety Program at Dell Children’s Medical Center in Austin, Texas, USA since 2020. Her research aims to understand factors associated with drowning risk, to assess clinical treatment of drowning and outcomes, to evaluate novel devices and interventions to reduce drowning risk and improve aquatic skills, and to explore long-term consequences of drowning events on families. She is also an adjunct Kinesiology Professor at the University of the Incarnate Word, with an academic focus on motor control and motor learning.
After completing an undergraduate degree in Biochemistry from Carleton College in Northfield, MN and a PhD in Neuroscience and Behavior from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Dr. Johnson received a postdoctoral research fellowship in Human Movement Science at Washington University Medical School in St. Louis, MO. As an AmSAT-certified Alexander Technique teacher, Dr. Johnson also maintains a small private practice working with performing artists, athletes, and people with chronic pain to develop a more conscious approach to posture and movement. She also teaches Alexander Technique-based Shaw Method swimming and therapeutic aquatics, specializing in teaching adult non-swimmers and people with movement, pain, or fear issues in the water.
